About ExteriorCalc

ExteriorCalc is a dedicated engineering and material planning utility built specifically for exterior home construction, renovation, and maintenance.

Our Focus & Scope

Exterior remodeling and construction projects require precise physical measurements. A single miscalculation on gable geometry, improper gutter slope, or inadequate attic ventilation can lead to wasted materials, water intrusion, ice damming, or premature roof structural failure.

ExteriorCalc focuses on three core exterior home disciplines:

  • Siding & Wall Cladding: Multi-wall takeoffs, triangular gable geometry, opening deductions, packaging carton counts, and architectural waste factor analysis.
  • Rainwater & Drainage: SMACNA-based gutter sizing methodology, 1/4-inch per 10-foot pitch elevation drops, downspout cross-sectional capacity, and trough water volume flow.
  • Soffit, Fascia & Ventilation: Eave overhang panel yields, aluminum fascia wrap splice losses, and International Residential Code (IRC Section R806) attic Net Free Vent Area (NFVA) balancing.

Mathematical Transparency

Unlike generic online calculators that hide formulas behind black boxes, ExteriorCalc operates on full mathematical transparency:

  • Every formula, variable definition, and unit conversion is openly documented.
  • Calculations are based on recognized standards, including the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA), the International Residential Code (IRC), and manufacturer technical installation guides (such as the Vinyl Siding Institute and James Hardie).
  • Assumptions and recommended purchase roundings are explicitly itemized.

Project Planning Notice

All calculators and planning tools on ExteriorCalc are designed to assist homeowners, builders, estimators, and contractors in budgeting and material takeoff estimation. Because building codes, regional climate conditions, and manufacturer installation requirements vary by jurisdiction, always verify final takeoffs with a licensed structural engineer, architect, or local building official.
