Multi-Wall & Gable Siding Engine

Siding Calculator

Calculate total siding squares, cartons, panels, and trim accessories for rectangular walls and gables with opening deductions.

Unit Mode:

1. Wall MeasurementsRequired

Enter length and height for each wall side. Check gable if wall has a triangular roof peak.

2. Deductions (Windows & Doors)Optional

Deducted from wall square footage and used to calculate J-channel trim.

How the Siding Calculation Works

Siding takeoffs require two distinct geometric operations: calculating standard rectangular wall areas and solving triangular gable end geometry, followed by deducting window and door openings.

Wall Width (W)Height (H)Gable Peak (P)
Figure 1: Siding measurement breakdown showing base wall width (W), eave height (H), triangular gable peak (P), and window/door deductions.

Siding Area & Squares Formula

Net Siding Area = Σ(Wall Width × Height) + Σ(0.5 × Gable Base × Peak) - Σ(Opening Areas)

Variables & Units:

W, H
Base wall width and eave height (feet or meters)
P
Gable peak height above eave line (feet or meters)
1 Square
Standard construction siding unit (100 sq ft)
Waste Multiplier
Waste allowance buffer (e.g. 1.10 for 10%)

Note: Final material orders are converted into Squares: Gross Squares = (Net Area × Waste Multiplier) / 100.

Real-World Example: 2-Story Home with 2 Gables

Scenario: A homeowner is replacing siding on a 40 ft × 30 ft two-story house with 10 ft eave walls, two gable ends with an 8 ft peak, 1 front door (21 sq ft), 8 windows (15 sq ft each), and 1 garage door (112 sq ft), adding 10% waste.

Step 1: Calculate Gross Rectangular Walls1,400 sq ft

2 walls × (40 ft × 10 ft) + 2 walls × (30 ft × 10 ft) = 800 + 600

Step 2: Calculate 2 Gable End Triangles240 sq ft

2 gables × (0.5 × 30 ft base × 8 ft peak) = 2 × 120

Step 3: Deduct Openings1,387 sq ft Net

Gross (1,640 sq ft) - Door (21 sq ft) - 8 Windows (120 sq ft) - Garage (112 sq ft)

Step 4: Apply 10% Waste Factor & Convert to Squares15.3 Siding Squares (8 Cartons)

1,387 sq ft × 1.10 = 1,525.7 sq ft ÷ 100 sq ft/square

Takeaway: Order 15.3 siding squares (8 standard 2-square cartons of vinyl) plus 140 linear feet of starter strip and 15 pieces of 12.5-ft J-channel.

Essential Siding Accessories Takeoff

Starter Strip:Installed continuously along the bottom chalk line of all siding walls. Calculated by measuring the total linear footage of base perimeter. Standard pieces are 10 feet long.
J-Channel & Undersill:Trims raw cut edges around windows, exterior doors, and soffit transitions. Ordered by perimeter linear footage in standard 12.5-foot lengths.
Corner Posts:Outside and inside corner posts are sold in 10-foot lengths. Measure each corner height to calculate whole post pieces.
Weather-Resistive Barrier:Building code (IRC R703.2) requires a water-resistive barrier (house wrap) behind all siding. 9 ft × 100 ft rolls provide ~800 sq ft of net coverage after 6-inch vertical/horizontal laps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a siding square in construction?

A siding square is the standard unit of measurement in residential cladding, representing exactly 100 square feet of finished wall surface area (for example, a 10-foot by 10-foot wall section). Siding materials, cartons, and labor rates are priced and ordered by the square.

How do you calculate siding for a triangular gable end?

To calculate gable siding area, multiply half the base wall width by the vertical peak height (Area = 0.5 × Base × Peak Height). For example, a gable with a 30-foot base and an 8-foot peak has an area of 0.5 × 30 × 8 = 120 square feet.

Should you deduct windows and doors when measuring for siding?

Yes. For accurate material takeoffs and accessory scheduling, calculate the square footage of all windows, exterior doors, and garage doors, and subtract them from your gross wall area. For J-channel trim and flashing estimates, measure the full perimeter around each opening.

How much extra waste should I add for siding?

Standard single-story rectangular homes require a 10% waste buffer. If your house has multiple gables, roof dormers, bay windows, or requires diagonal/shake cuts, increase your waste buffer to 12% to 15% to account for non-reusable angle scrap.
